The New York Mets just threw the first Major League no-hitter of 2022. And what a game it was. Five Mets' pitchers combined for the no-no on Friday April 29th, 2022. And who earned the win? None other than Tylor Megill... a 26 year old righty in his second season in the Majors.
But where did he come from?! You probably don't remember his name from past seasons, or any prospect rankings. Well... here's how he became the pitcher he is today.
Megill was previously ranked 23rd on the Mets' prospect list (from 2018). But... he actually was much better than his number 23 overall ranking gave him credit for. Megill went to college at the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ. In his senior year at the UofA, Megill pitched 32 innings, allowing 17 earned runs on 38 hits. He had one win, three losses and 6 saves on the UofA's pitching squad. Not great, right? Well, when the time comes for the Mets to draft, they select Tylor Megill as the 230th overall pick of the 2018 MLB draft. Right out of the gate, Megill is ranked as the 23rd best player in the Mets' weak Minor League system... But he quickly climbed through the Minor Leagues.
Megill started his pro career in Brooklyn with the Mets' High-A affiliate, the Brooklyn Cyclones. In that short sample size... he was pretty good, sporting a 3.21 ERA and 10 earned runs... although, at that point, he hadn't pitched a full pro season yet.
Then, in 2019, Megill played with two single-a teams in the Minors, before being promoted to Double-A for one game. In 2019, his stats combined over the course of the varied Minor League teams he played for were a 3.52 ERA in 22 games, with 28 earned runs.
After not playing baseball in 2020 (due to the cancelled 2020 MiLB season), Tylor Megill was invited to 2021 Spring Training by the New York Mets. In Spring Training, he pitched in one game and recorded two outs. After his short stint in Spring Training, he was sent back to the Minor Leagues. After 5 games in Double-A, and a 3.12 ERA with 9 earned runs, Megill was promoted to the Syracuse Mets (Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets).

Over the course of 3 games pitched for Syracuse, Megill had a 3.77 ERA and 6 earned runs. After just those three games in AAA, Megill's contract was selected by the Mets on June 23rd, 2021. In just three seasons in the Minor Leagues, Tylor Megill was headed to New York!
Megill made his Major League debut on June 23rd, 2021.
"Here's Tylor Megill, who is making his major league debut today. Megill has done great in the Minor Leagues... He's been really the mets best minor league pitcher this year, at least in the high miners at 3.35 ERA he's put up 59 strikeouts in 40 and 2/3 innings between Double-A and Triple-A, so this will be an opportunity," says Mets announcer Gary Cohen on the day of Megill's debut.
In Megill's Major League debut with the Mets, he pitched 4 innings, allowing three hits and two runs with four strikeouts and four walks.
As of 4/30/22, Megill has pitched five games, putting up a 1.93 ERA, 10th best in the National League. Megill also has had 27 strikeouts and four wins. And to put the cherry on top, Megill started (and earned the win) in Friday's no hitter!
"He struck him out! Five Met pitchers combined for the second no hitter in New York Mets history! Edwin Diaz puts on the finishing touches, striking out the side of the ninth inning, and the Mets celebrate their second ever no-hitter, started by Tylor Megill, finished by Edwin Diaz as the Mets no hit the Phillies," was Mets announcer Gary Cohen's final call from Friday night.
From his beginnings as 230th overall pick in the 2018 draft, Megill has proven to be one of the best on the Mets' pitching staff, adding to the greatness of the (current) best team in the National League.
